A Study on Self-care of Individuals Having a Colostomy

Abstract

|
With the recent increase in colon and rectal cancer in Korea, there is an increasing number of the patients having a colostomy.
If Mile´s operation is done for the treatment of a colon and rectal cancer, the patients with a colostomy have any physical, social, and emotional difficulties. Also they find it difficult to adapt themselves to a new life style.
Self-care is an essential part in care for patients having chronic disease, especially patients having a colostomy and health education program need to develop to promote self-care of individuals. In this review, self-care and self-care behavior, the problem of individuals having a colostomy and self-care demand, and health education for their self-care is described.
